KAYLEIGH HUNNICUTT, PH.D.

Hi! I am Dr. Kayleigh Hunnicutt, I am a licensed psychologist currently based out of Columbus, OH. I lived in sunny Southern California for 14 years prior to moving back to the Midwest a few years ago. My clientele are adults ages 18 and older, and often consist of athletes, entrepreneurs, executives, doctors, graduate and college students, musicians and creatives, and individuals who generally consider themselves to be high achieving and striving.

My primary foci in therapy are in helping clients manage:

  • Anxiety/depression

  • Life transitions and stressors

  • Life stagnation stress

  • Relationship stressors

  • Imposter Syndrome

  • Perfectionism

  • Sports-related stressors

  • Performance stress

  • Career stress

  • High-achievement stress

  • ADHD and executive functioning challenges within other mental health distress

  • Challenging family dynamics

  • Resolving the feeling of being “stuck”

My goal in our work together is to help you develop skills to manage and understand your symptoms of distress (e.g., reduce anxiety, depression) while also equipping you with the tools to feel successful, empowered, confident, worthy, and supported. I want you to feel like you can breathe, you are heard, and that you are thriving in your best life when you leave me. In order to achieve these goals, I often focus on two simultaneous pathways in therapy:

  1. Helping you build coping skills to address and manage symptoms of distress; and

  2. Championing you while we enhance your ability to live your most meaning-filled life, one that is congruent with your values, needs, and purpose.

An easy way to imagine this approach is being akin to Therapy + Life Coaching. I believe my clients to be whole people who simply need information and support.

As such, my approach is often supportive but direct, and educational/skill-based but also process/insight-oriented. And there’s a lot of humor – because if this is going to be vulnerable, we might as well laugh occasionally!

Furthermore, I have a deep affection for high-achieving populations, and I tailor my approaches specifically to meet the needs of high achievers. There is a nuanced difference in the way stress feels to people within this population, as well as to how their environments react to them and what their environments expect from them. This often translates into various increased pressures regarding what they “should” do, and an increased sense of isolation when mental health starts to become challenging to manage. Together, we can address any of these (or related) challenges and break down barriers to becoming the version of yourself that is truly aligned with what you want, regardless of what any external stressors or environments are pressuring you to do. In this way, we can cultivate a healthy relationship with success, with others, and with ourselves.

I received an MA in General-Experimental Psychology from California State University Northridge, and both an MEd and PhD in the combined and APA-accredited Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology program at University of California Santa Barbara. I have a long history of utilizing evidence-based and best practices across various populations and presenting problems, and have worked in private clinics, university settings and in research, in community-based settings, and in school-based settings.

Therapeutic Approaches

I utilize strengths-based strategies that are drawn from multiple modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Positive Psychology, Solution-Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Sports/Performance Psychology, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and tidbits of other modalities or specific interventions from other modalities not listed (e.g., mindfulness, parenting skills, family therapy dynamics, couples therapy/Gottman methods, etc.). For many circumstances, I also approach our work together from a trauma-informed perspective and approach, though it is important to note that I do not regularly treat trauma-specific disorders (e.g., I do not treat PTSD). I also love to provide psychoeducation whenever possible and will cite research and provide handouts whenever I can.
